USA Swimming Splashes in the Desert!
Palm Desert, CA February 5, 2004-—As anticipation for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games begins to stir in the hearts of America’s elite athletes, Palm Desert Aquatics, a local member of United States Swimming, the national governing body for the sport of swimming in America, will host a two-day swim competition. It will be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 7th and 8th at La Quinta High School’s Aquatic Center. Dubbed “February Freeze II,” this swim meet is competition for swimmers as young as age five (swimming 25 yard events) up through Olympic hopefuls as they fine tune their strokes in preparation for the Olympic Trials to be held in Long Beach this coming July.
This meet is officially sanctioned through Southern California Swimming, a local swim committee of USA Swimming. Age group and senior competitive swimmers from throughout the Eastern Section, (swim clubs from Glendora, south to Murrieta, throughout the Inland Empire, and including teams from Henderson and Las Vegas Nevada) will be competing for best times, ribbons and medals.
Palm Desert Aquatics is a nonprofit organization comprised of swimmers from nearly half of the desert cities with its home training pool at College of the Desert (C.O.D.). PDAQ swimmers compete year-round at various swim meets throughout Southern California. Currently, Palm Desert Aquatics employs three professional coaches and offers swim training five evenings a week with new member orientation and assessments each Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at the C.O.D. pool.
The all-volunteer PDAQ Board of Directors meets each month to help maintain the club organization and to prepare for community activities in which it participates. Many team projects are fundraisers in order to help defray the monthly fees that its 70 – 130 swim families pay for participation.
PDAQ’s fundraising efforts have met with wonderful community support. Recently, the team received an energy grant from a local foundation and the city of Palm Desert to help offset substantial pool heating costs. In addition, local business sponsors have been anxious to help contribute to the excellent youth program that PDAQ offers. Meet sponsors for February Freeze II include Fantasy Springs Casino, and Lifetime Patios of La Quinta.
