Playing Pool Enables Delaware Woman to Overcome Disabilities and Give Back to Community

Wilmington, Delaware - Delaware billiards pro Karen Armstrong began playing pool as a means to rehabilitate from multiple, permanently disabling injuries, and her dedication to pool playing led her to create DelawareBilliards.com as a means of sharing her love of the game.

Born and raised in Charleston, SC, Karen and her husband moved to Delaware in 1993. In Delaware for less than a month, Karen was in a life-threatening motorcycle accident that resulted in compound leg fractures, wrist and arm fractures, and a pelvis that was shattered into more than forty pieces. Karen's injuries led to a yearlong hospital stay.

After leaving the hospital, Karen used a wheelchair for about a year. While in her wheelchair, Karen began playing pool as a means of exercise and physical therapy. After extensive rehabilitation, Karen progressed to using crutches.

"Finally, when I upgraded to crutches, I was able to go to a pool room that had steps (2 flights I might add). I would walk around the table with one crutch and hold on to the table with my other hand. It was absolutely the best therapy I could have ever received," Karen tells us.

Playing pool forced her to stand and walk, and she was soon able to walk unassisted.

Karen adds, "People do not think of billiards as being an athletic sport. But if you really think about it, how much walking do you actually do? You are walking around the table, constantly reaching and stretching for the rack, bending over to grab the balls out of the box - it was the best therapy."

It did not take long for Karen to succeed and overcome her disabilities. Her passion for billiards enabled her to focus her mind and energy on something other than her accident. She began practicing five days and nights a week and playing in weekly tournaments, ultimately earning many tournament wins and three state championships.

To share her pool knowledge and love of the game, Karen has contracted The Writer's Block (www.goodresume.com) to build DelawareBilliards.com, which officially launched in July 2002. Karen also organizes and runs the Delaware State Bar Table 9-Ball Championship and other tournaments, and hosts pool clinics and lessons in her area.
